Gladis to the Rescue!

Gladis is a friendly and playful orca who loves to swim and play with her friends in the Gibraltar Sea. But lately silly human fishermen appear constantly and endangering the orcas by fishing. 

Gladis knows that she has to do something to stop the fishermen. So she needs your help. 

HOW TO PLAY: 

Approach and take down as many boats as you can in the limited time and achieve the highest score possible.

How to score points?

-Each boat takedown is worth 1 point.

-Takedowns while being in the air (jumping) are worth 2 points.

In Desktop Devices: Use WASD or Arrow keys to move and press the SpaceBar to jump.

In Mobile Devices: Use the on screen Joystick to move and the Button on the right to Jump.

Why create this game?

This game was created to make us humans reflect on what we are doing to protect animal species in our shared environment. 

Did you know that orcas are a vulnerable animal species? Now considered as a data deficient (DD) species. This is due to poaching, illegal fishing , pollution, and habitat loss. It is important that we all do what we can to protect them!

Inspired by the Story of Gladis the Orca:

On may 4, 2023 in the strait of Gibraltar, off the coast of Spain, 3 orcas rammed a boat with all their force and pierced the rudder. This has become a recurring event since two days before that,  another 6 orcas assaulted another ships.

Experts believe that this behavior is caused because an Orca called "White Gladis" suffered a moment of agony, in which she could have  collided or been almost trapped by illegal fishing activities. This event changed her behavior towards the boats. And its believed other orcas have been imitating this conduct.

This story became an internet phenomenon, but if this situation escalates, it could be a hazard to boaters and a conservation concern for this critically endangered orca subpopulation. That in 2011, there were an estimated 39 in the Strait of Gibraltar.

Gladis es una orca amigable y juguetona a la que le encanta nadar y jugar con sus amigos en el mar de Gibraltar. Pero últimamente, los humanos y sus botes aparecen constantemente y ponen en peligro a las orcas al pescar.

Gladis sabe que tiene que hacer algo para detener a los botes. Por eso ella necesita tu ayuda. 

CÓMO JUGAR:

Acércate y derriba tantos botes como puedas en un tiempo limitado y consigue la mayor puntuación posible.

¿Cómo sumar puntos?

-Cada derribo de de bote vale 1 punto.

-Los derribos estando en el aire (saltando) valen 2 puntos.

En dispositivos de Escritorio: usa las teclas WASD o las teclas de flechas para moverte y presione la barra espaciadora para saltar.

En Dispositivos Móviles: Use el Joystick en pantalla para moverse y el Botón a la derecha para Saltar.

¿Por qué crear este juego?

Este juego fue creado con la sana intención de que los humanos reflexionemos sobre lo que estamos haciendo para proteger a las especies animales en nuestro entorno compartido.

¿Sabías que las orcas son una especie animal vulnerable? Ahora se considera una especie con datos insuficientes (DD). Esto se debe a la caza furtiva, la pesca ilegal, la contaminación y la pérdida de hábitat. ¡Es importante que todos hagamos lo que podamos para protegerlos!

Inspirado en la historia de Gladis la orca:

El 4 de mayo, 2023 en el estrecho de Gibraltar, frente a las costas de España, 3 orcas embistieron con todas sus fuerzas a un barco y perforaron el timón. Esto se ha convertido en un hecho recurrente ya que dos días antes, otras 6 orcas asaltaron otros barcos.

Los expertos creen que este comportamiento se debe a que una orca llamada "Gladis Blanca" sufrió un momento de agonía, en el que pudo haber chocado o casi quedar atrapada por actividades de pesca ilegal. Este evento cambió su comportamiento hacia los barcos. Y se cree que otras orcas han estado imitando esta conducta.

Esta historia se convirtió en un fenómeno de Internet, pero si esta situación se intensifica, podría ser un peligro para los navegantes y un problema de conservación para esta subpoblación de orcas en peligro crítico. Que en 2011 se estima que había 39 en el Estrecho de Gibraltar.
